Beginner American Mahjong starter kit

A thin, honest shopping order for your first U.S. / NMJL-style table — what to buy first, what stays optional, and what never comes “in the box” on this shop.

In one line

Tiles → racks → mat → League card → optional extras

Orders usually process in 1–3 business days. Standard shipping $18.00 or free from $150.00. Unused returns within 30 days.

  1. Step 1. Choose an American ~166-tile set

Confirm the listing is American Mahjong format (about 166 tiles with jokers), not a Chinese ~144-tile set. Pick a theme you will actually put on the table. Titles stay honest — tiles and named packaging only.

  2. Step 2. Add four racks with pushers

Most American tables use four acrylic racks so each player’s hand stays private and walls push cleanly. Sold separately in Accessories — not included with tile sets unless a title truly says so.

  3. Step 3. Add a non-slip table mat

A mat protects the table and quiets acrylic. Optional for a kitchen-table trial; recommended for regular hosting.

  4. Step 4. Buy the current NMJL card from the League

We do not sell or reprint the official National Mah Jongg League card. Purchase the current year from the League or your club, then use our holders or sleeves if you want the card upright and protected.

  5. Step 5. Optional: dice, wind kit, holders, travel case

Add card holders or sleeves, dice and a dealer/wind marker kit, and a soft or aluminum case only if you need them. Shop à la carte on Accessories.

What “starter kit” means here

We do not sell a pre-bundled beginner box with invented racks or an NMJL card inside. “Starter kit” on this page means a shopping checklist you build yourself from real catalog SKUs — same honesty as our how to choose compare table.

Quick answers

Beginner FAQ

Answers share the same facts as the site FAQ where topics overlap (racks, NMJL, gaps, shipping) — we do not invent a second policy. Prefer gift deep hashes (#gift-chooser / #gift-notes); bare /gift drops the hash on redirect.

What accessories complete a starter table?

Most players add four acrylic racks with pushers, a non-slip mat, NMJL card holders or sleeves, dice, and a dealer/wind marker kit. Soft travel cases, aluminum hard cases, and a tile cleaning cloth are optional. Shop Table essentials — no fake rack+mat claims on tile PDPs. Official NMJL card is sold by the League, not us (NMJL guide) — we are not affiliated with the NMJL. Checklist: beginner starter · how to choose · mat & racks. Wipe care: FAQ · tile care. Gifts: prefer gift chooser hashes — bare /gift drops the hash on redirect.

Do your sets include racks and a mat?

No — unless a title and pack shot clearly say otherwise. Our themed sets are sold as tiles (and any packaging named in the title). Acrylic racks with pushers, table mats, card holders, dice, and travel bags are listed separately so we never invent “complete” bundles. Shop Table essentials · racks, mat, and the mat & racks guide. Decision help: how to choose · wipe: FAQ · tile care.

Do you sell the official NMJL card? Does it change every year?

We do not sell the official National Mah Jongg League card. The League publishes a new card of hands each year — buy the current card from the League or your club (we do not invent or reprint a year-specific card). Ersashopline is an independent retailer and is not affiliated with the NMJL. We sell card holders, sleeves, and line finders so your official card stays readable — cards pictured for fit are not included. Full walkthrough: NMJL cards guide. Format help: how to choose · 166 vs 144. New host? Beginner starter.

How many tiles are in an American Mahjong set?

A standard American Mahjong (Mah Jongg) set has about 166 tiles, including jokers used for NMJL-style hands. That differs from many Chinese sets (often ~144) and Japanese riichi sets. Read each listing for American format when you play with a yearly NMJL card. See how to choose · 166 vs 144, the NMJL cards guide, and the beginner starter.

How do I clean and care for acrylic Mahjong tiles?

Dust or wipe acrylic tiles with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth (our parlor microfiber cloth is sold separately under Accessories · care). Avoid abrasives, solvents, and harsh cleaners — we do not invent antibacterial, medical, or lifetime-warranty claims. Cloths, trays, and coasters are table care, not spare replacement tiles (spares FAQ). Finish the table à la carte in the mat & racks · complete table section. Unused returns: returns flow.

Can I play with tiles only?

Yes. Tiles alone are enough to deal and play. Racks keep hands private and make wall-pushing smoother; a mat protects the table. On Ersashopline, themed sets are tiles (and packaging named in the title) unless the title says otherwise — we never invent “complete” bundles. More on the site FAQ · racks included.

What is the shopping order for beginners?

Honest order: (1) American ~166 tile set, (2) four racks with pushers, (3) table mat, (4) NMJL card from the League, (5) card holders or sleeves, (6) optional dice / wind kit / travel case. Skip anything you already own. More on the site FAQ · starter table.

Do you sell the official NMJL card with the starter kit?

No. We do not sell, reprint, or bundle the official National Mah Jongg League card, and we are not an official NMJL store. Buy the current year from the League or your club, then add holders or sleeves from Accessories — we never invent scorecard SKUs. More on the site FAQ · NMJL card.

When should I add racks and a mat?

Tiles alone are enough for a kitchen-table trial. Add four hinged acrylic racks (not magnetic wood) when hands need privacy and Charleston; add a non-slip mat when the table is bare wood or glass. Shopping order lives in the mat & racks guide — we never invent complete bundles on tile PDPs. More on the site FAQ · acrylic racks.

How do I wipe acrylic tiles after the first game?

Dust or wipe with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth. Avoid abrasives and solvents — we do not invent antibacterial, medical, or lifetime-warranty claims. Cloths live under Accessories · care; they are not spare tiles. More on the site FAQ · tile care.
